I became a Realtor because I was taken advantage of by a major builder many years ago, back when I was a young first-time homebuyer. I stupidly thought that I could 'save a few bucks' by not having a Realtor, but I was dead wrong. Not having a Realtor to represent you on a real estate deal is like not having a Lawyer to represent you in a court case -- you end up losing.
My loss went beyond me -- bad faith and crooked realtors representing the builder impacted my entire community, with lasting repercussions that continue to this very day. I guess I was lucky in a way; two of my neighbors were evicted from their new construction homes and their houses razed by order of the local government. Critical failures in construction forced members of my community out of their homes forever.
The Realtors involved in selling me and my neighbors our poorly constructed homes continue serving as Realtors to this very day, unapologetic for the lives that they affected. I felt so strongly from that experience that not only did I become a Licensed Realtor, but I also went on to become a Juris Doctor, specializing in Property Law.
